Photo Gallery for October 2010 - Nearing Completion

Back to the gallery landing page.

As construction nears completion, Farm Power Northwest and Van Wingerden Greenhouses look forward to the digester being operational by mid November, and the radiant floor heating system in the greenhouse being operational sometime in December. Read more about the project.

Dirt insulation

As the digester nears completion the walls of the structure are now blanketed with a layer of dirt insulation.
Compare that to last month's photo from this same spot.

The digester will be filled with manure before the end of October and should be fully operational by mid November.

Visiting the digester

Today's monthly trip to the digester was special because Rick Larsen, WA state congressman Rick Larsen (right) came to visit and learn about the project. Also pictured: Pinky Vargas, Puget Sound Energy; and Kevin Maas of Farm Power Northwest.

In the mechanical building

The insulated hot water storage tank has been installed, but a lot of room is still left for the engine-generator—to be delivered soon.

gathered at the south end

The group gathered at the south end of the digester vessel to view recent progress.

Spray foam spray insulation

Spray foam insulation (a few inches thick) at the south end of the building can be seen on the last remaining wall that hasn't been covered with dirt insulation.

manure pipe from MJD dairy

The blue pipe will carry fresh manure from nearby MJD dairy into the vessel.

hot water pipe to the greenhouse

Standing at the edge of the digester plot you can look across the field to the Van Wingerden greenhouse. The bare dirt is where pipe is now buried that will deliver hot water from the digester to the radiant floor heating system in the greenhouse. A holding tank directly adjacent to the greenhouse is yet to built.

Van Wingerden Greenhouse

The group made a trip over to the adjacent Van Wingerden greenhouse to see the radiant floor heating set up.

hot water valves

A greenhouse employee shows us the control valves (yellow handles) for the hot water. Piping buried in sand is just beneath the black tarps. View an early photo of the sand flooring.

The radiant floor heating system will be operational sometime in December.

Mums for fall

Mums for fall in the Van Wingerden Greenhouse sit atop the sand flooring heated by buried hot water pipes.
