Farmers Growing Trees for Salmon to Give Away 13,000 Trees in October, November

The Farmers Growing Trees for Samon (FGTFS) program is ten years old this year and will give away 13,000 trees this fall at three farm locations. To date more than 100,000 free trees have been given away to the community to improve water quality in Whatcom County.

Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar, and Sitka Spruce will be available at each location.

This year's trees are planted in farmers' fields. Community members should come with a shovel and be prepared to dig most of their own trees. Some volunteers will be on hand to assist with digging and bagging trees. Bags will be provided for transport. Quantities of 50 or more trees must be pre-ordered by visiting the Farm Friends website at www.wcfarmfriends.com or by calling the office at 360-354-1337.

Two year old tree plugs that were purchased with a grant from the Whatcom County PUD have been planted and nurtured by
volunteer farmer growers and community members for 1-3 years. Volunteer farmer growers commit to weeding and watering the trees to encourage good growth. When the trees are large enough to be planted out in Whatcom County watersheds, they are given away to the public for free.

Community members who take the free trees commit to planting them along streams, ponds, wetlands, or ditches to improve water quality.

Farmers Growing Trees for Salmon Needs Volunteers

For our tree giveaways this fall we'll need some volunteers to help us out. Volunteer duties include:
  • Greet community members who arrive to pick up trees
  • Assist people with choosing and digging up their trees
  • Digging, bundling, and bagging trees for pre-orders
  • Direct people to the sign-up table where they will indicate how many trees they are taking and where they plan to plant them
  • Assist people with the sign-up sheets
  • Hand out educational materials on tree planting and maintenance tips
  • Answer basic questions about tree planting and maintenance (orientation will be provided at the start of your shift)
  • Explain how the FGTFS program works (you will receive an orientation)

You can sign up for a whole day or a half day here: Visit our website to sign up for a volunteer shift now! or call the Farm Friends office at 360-354-1337.

Meet Our Farmer Volunteers!

Since 2000 many local producer farmers have volunteered their land and significant time and effort toward maintenance of trees for the FGTFS program. Growers must weed, water, and fertilize the trees to ensure their healthy growth.

Here are the folks we'd like thank for their service and committment to water quality in Whatcom County.
